Nothing Phone (3) Review: A New Flagship Fusing AI and Light

Nothing has always been that brand that “doesn’t follow the usual path.” Even though it only launched its first phone in 2022, it carved out its own style among a sea of lookalike Android phones thanks to that transparent back and signature lighting effects.

In July, Nothing introduced the Nothing Phone (3) in London, describing it as the company’s first genuine flagship device aimed at redefining what a premium smartphone can be. So what’s the big focus this time? In short: More. Playful. Smart.

The lighting isn’t just cool — it’s a usable “second screen”

First, the most eye-catching part: the Glyph Matrix on the back. The previous generation had segmented LED strips that lit up with notifications — distinctive, but a bit simple. This time it’s upgraded to a circular dot-matrix display with 489 individually controllable micro-LEDs, embedded neatly under the camera module.

This isn’t just decoration — it really shows information. You can see the time, battery level, weather, or even use it as a stopwatch. Even more fun, it supports dot-matrix games (officially called “Glyph Toys”), and acts as a viewfinder and fill light for selfies. Put it face down on a table and it becomes an interactive little notification panel. Nothing also announced they’ll open the SDK to developers so this back display can do even more in the future.

Honestly, this “slightly geeky, slightly artistic” approach is perfectly in line with Nothing’s usual vibe.

Serious hardware upgrades

But don’t think it’s just about flashy lights. This time Nothing has delivered serious hardware, too.

- It’s powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, claimed to be 125% faster than the previous generation.

- Up to 24GB of RAM (with a RAM Boost scheme), so multitasking and app retention should be excellent.

- A 6.67-inch AMOLED display with top-tier specs.

- A truly flagship-level camera setup: three 50MP sensors, including the main camera (with OIS), a 3x optical + 60x AI “super zoom” periscope telephoto (that also does macro), and a 114° ultra-wide.

In short, there’s no longer that “cool lighting but weak SoC” trade-off. The Nothing Phone (3) is clearly aiming to compete with the big flagship brands.

Generative AI on board

This year’s big trend in smartphones is “AI,” and Nothing isn’t missing out. They’re calling their AI tools Essential Space, with the main goal of using generative AI to capture, record, transcribe, and summarize content.

For example, you can record a meeting, and it will automatically transcribe and highlight key points. Through Essential Search, you can search across apps and files — for instance, finding content in screenshots, notes, or recordings. Put simply: it’s aiming to turn your phone into a smarter personal assistant instead of just a collection of separate apps.

On the software side, it comes preloaded with Nothing OS 3.5, based on Android 15. The interface continues that “clean, flat, slightly iOS-like” style, but still keeps Android’s flexibility. Nothing is promising 5 years of major OS updates and 7 years of security patches — pretty generous for the Android world.

Expanding the ecosystem: Nothing Headphones (1)

Alongside the phone, they also introduced their first over-ear headphones, the Nothing Headphones (1). They stick to the same transparent design language, making them a perfect match for the phone, and the key specs are impressive:

- Equipped with custom 50mm drivers designed for high-resolution audio, with support for LDAC and LHDC codecs.

- Features hybrid active noise cancellation capable of reducing noise by up to 50dB, automatically adapting to ambient conditions.

- Includes a transparency mode that lets outside sounds in, so you can stay aware without removing the headphones.

One of the coolest touches is how well Nothing’s ecosystem works together. For instance, the Phone (3)’s Glyph Matrix can display the headphones’ battery level and connection status, creating a seamless, unified experience. The Nothing X App lets you customize sound profiles, switch noise-cancelling modes, update firmware, and so on — overall a very smooth experience.

Price and availability

- Nothing Phone (3): 12+256GB version: $799; 12+512GB version: $899

- Nothing Headphones (1): $299

Both products will be widely available starting July 15.

In summary

The Nothing Phone (3) pushes its “design-first” philosophy to the extreme — but not just for show. The lighting effects now genuinely work as a useful second screen. Hardware performance is finally up to true flagship standards, the camera system is highly capable, and the AI features are on-trend for 2024.

If you’re tired of Android flagships that all look the same and want something with unique design but no compromises on specs, the Nothing Phone (3) might be that rare choice that’s both special and complete. Add in the headphones for a seamless ecosystem experience, and the whole strategy is starting to look a lot like Apple — but with its own distinct “punk” flavor.
